"a queer bird, like a bunch of old rag", Paul Delprat

"a frightening dip in the sandy foam", Paul Delprat

This watercolour by Sydney artist Paul Delprat depicts Lawrence bathing in the Pacific Ocean at Thirroul south of Sydney. It is part of a series of paintings by Delprat of Lawrence at Thirroul

Paul Delprat is the principal of the Julian Ashton Art School which was founded by his great-grandfather, Julian Rossi Ashton. Paul studied drawing and painting at the School which is in the historic Rocks area of Sydney. He particularly enjoys painting the human female figure, and is also a highly-regarded portrait painter.

He has worked as adviser and artist on two Norman Lindsay films: Age of Consent, starring James Mason and Helen Mirren, and Sirens, starring Hugh Grant and Elle Macpherson.

Paul is a member of the D.H. Lawrence Society of Australia.
